Spring just won’t make up its mind. One day it cracks open the door, the next day, slams it shut.
And I’m fed up! Come on, Spring, get a move on. Some years, snowdrops have finished by now. This year, they have barely started.
These poor little snowdrops are coated with ice from this morning’s freezing rain. And yes, that’s a patch of snow in front of them.
In a normal spring, by now water would be splashing gaily over the rocks at The Cascade. Instead it is freezing in mid-air.

I agree, the ice patterns that the water leaves behind are nice. I’d happily praise them if I saw them in March.

But it’s mid April. Often I see my first daffodil on April 15. This year, all I see are tips of green poking their heads out.
With sunny skies and rising temperatures predicted for the coming weekend, these daffodils may grow quickly. Or maybe it will turn cold again and send them shivering for cover.
So what’s up, Spring? What’s holding you back? If you’re a prodigal child who spent all your good weather elsewhere, come home, we forgive you. If it’s something we said or did, we’re sorry. Really, we are.
Just come. We are here, ready to welcome you in with open arms.
I feel the same way. But when I look at first bloom records that I kept in the 90s (http://www.coldclimategardening.com/2004/02/26/counting-the-days-till-spring/), I see that they aren’t far off from what I’ve experienced this year. I’m forced to conclude that I’ve gotten spoiled by many years of milder springs and that this is actually more like it used to be.
I do not want to hear this, Kathy! I wish I’d kept similar records. I have a few benchmark plants and dates — daffodils (in sheltered spots only) in bloom on April 15 being one. It seems that while spring is coming later, fall is lasting longer. We’ve had relatively warm temperatures through to the end of October for the last few years.
Magnolias here but cool, cloudy etc and more inline with the political situation than Spring! My birches have leaves now so all is pretty good!

I am totally frustrated !!!! I am looking out my window and the snow is falling. On April 17. No spring in sight.
And so grey and gloomy. Hate it!
Basically the same weather here in Maine.There was general agreement that the rest of the week would be better weather than yesterday — only because there was no place to go but up. They are promising us sunshine and near-seasonal temperatures this weekend and maybe even some 60s (F) next week. I am more than ready for spring to get here and melt the rest of this snow and ice.
Everywhere in the northeast seems is the same. I hear that next week temperatures will rise, maybe to 20C. That would be amazing.
Yup. We’re getting a bit more snow tonight, but I’m hopeful that it will quickly melt away. The weekend forecast is halfway decent, so I’m trying to be hopeful.
