In a cold climate, even the trees wear coats. A few days ago, on the 15th day of spring, this elderly woman was putting a brave face on it.

Is it just me, or do others see a resemblance to Gertrude Jekyll? |
These little guys, though, looked so dejected I wanted to give them a pat on the back.

The three Arctic explorers are almost done in. Who can blame them? It’s a long trek from the steps to the sidewalk. |
An erstwhile member of the Ku Klux Klan was looking suspiciously across the street…
|
Standing on guard, just in case the snow decides to melt. |
at a solitary pilgrim. Was she hiding something under her hood?
|
A pilgrim or an Ewok with a pointy head? |
A tightly-bundled group in white was making its way up a hill. Do you see the man cupping his mouth, third from the left? Is he shouting to someone just out of sight on top of the hill? And what about the slender woman who has turned around to look back down the hill. Is she waiting for the slowpoke at the rear? And what did she say to make him hang his head like that?
|
Where are they going? |
Down the street, a choir was singing a song, directed by a monk with no hands.
Their words were muffled, but the jaunty tune tempted one brave soul to bare her face to the cold. Could it be true?
The snowman perked up, suddenly optimistic enough to remove his jacket.
|
Don’t you love the cucumber eyes? |
Let’s celebrate. Winter is over! It’s time to melt.
|
Those with sharp eyes will note that the snowman in this picture is not the same as the one above. But who wants to spoil a good story?

Very nice too! Winter sculpture for the garden – the slope with several figures was really impressive. Keep the photos in plain site come summer and shoot the same trees again! Some of them very Tolkien, gandalf…others a big hobbit or like the dwarves out of snow white. I saw my first bulb popping up today in a Montreal garden. Wonder how yours are doing. Roll on spring!
Roll on spring — so right! Love the idea of taking the photo again in summer… will try to remember to do that. But it’s funny what people see: so many facebook friends have made political connections with veiled women, etc. Not my intention, but people see what they see!
More sculpture in the garden, in fact.
Exactly!
I’ve never seen anything like this, it’s amazing. It must be sad when they are wrapped, entertaining while they are wrapped, (with the garden peopled with such characterful characters statues) and a sense of relief and anticipation when they are unwrapped.
You are right, Lucy.Every year I experience all those emotions and more. But the best is when the wrappings come off!
