Along the path,\u00a0large forked tree branches, inverted to suggest walking figures, held\u00a0chimes that\u00a0visitors could\u00a0play. Initially the music of the chimes was\u00a0high-pitched and discordant, and\u00a0as the visitor circled toward the central clearing, the sounds became deeper and more harmonious. In a\u00a0parallel fashion, the intentionally inverted tree branches gradually changed from shaped trunks that showed the evidence of intention and artifice, to once again\u00a0become\u00a0merely … trees.<\/p>\n

In the central clearing, closely-spaced tree trunks created a quiet enclosure. Moss and ferns covered the\u00a0ground around a single living tree. One chime hung from this tree, out of reach of visitors, played\u00a0only by the wind. Peace promised — and withheld.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0requirement\u00a0of the submission was to explain how the proposed garden contributed to the renewal of the art of the garden.\u00a0This is what we wrote:<\/p>\n
\u00ab\u00a0Traditionally, gardens were proxies for power and status \u2013 beautiful pre-planned creations that marked our separation from nature even as they drew us closer to it. Taiz\u00e9 challenges this historic assumption by using ephemeral materials and ephemeral sounds that are created by nature and by each person who enters. Its \u00ab\u00a0meaning\u00a0\u00bb is not derived from horticultural aesthetics but is contingent on the individual\u2019s spontaneous engagement with a world always in flux.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n
