{"id":7323,"date":"2019-03-17T20:41:42","date_gmt":"2019-03-17T20:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.siteandinsight.com\/?p=7323"},"modified":"2019-03-17T20:41:42","modified_gmt":"2019-03-17T20:41:42","slug":"oh-deer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glenvillaartgarden.com\/fr\/oh-deer\/","title":{"rendered":"Oh, Deer!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long winters like the one we are experiencing this year in Quebec&rsquo;s Eastern Townships make life difficult for animals.\u00a0 Deep snow that persists for months makes it\u00a0hard for\u00a0deer to find food in the woods and as time passes they come closer and closer to barns and houses.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I glanced out a window, disrupting two deer\u00a0who were not far away, searching for something to eat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7324\" style=\"width: 5194px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7324\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7324\" src=\"http:\/\/glenvillaartgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/deer-1-of-6.jpg\" alt=\"Here's looking at you!\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&rsquo;s looking at you!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As I went to get my camera,\u00a0another deer appeared.\u00a0 Then another, and another, and another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7325\" style=\"width: 3972px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7325\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7325\" src=\"http:\/\/glenvillaartgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/deer-2-of-6.jpg\" alt=\"Is it party time?\" width=\"3962\" height=\"2704\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Is it party time?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&rsquo;t get a definite count &#8212; the deer kept coming and going, in and out of view &#8212; but there were at least eight of them. As I watched, they lined up single file, as if they had decided to go for a walk along the bank of the lake.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7326\" style=\"width: 5194px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7326\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7326\" src=\"http:\/\/glenvillaartgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/deer-3-of-6.jpg\" alt=\"Left, right, left, right.\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I count eight deer here. I think there were several more in the rear.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To get a closer look,\u00a0I quietly opened the door and went out onto the deck. But of course, that startled the deer. They took off across the snow-covered ground. First three came into view,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7327\" style=\"width: 1808px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7327\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7327\" src=\"http:\/\/glenvillaartgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/deer-4-of-6.jpg\" alt=\"Leaping\" width=\"1798\" height=\"1181\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The deer are leaping across what used to be The Big Lawn and is now The Big Meadow.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; then four &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7328\" style=\"width: 2505px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7328\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7328\" src=\"http:\/\/glenvillaartgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/deer-5-of-6.jpg\" alt=\"Four\" width=\"2495\" height=\"1697\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I think the deer in the lead looks more like a kangaroo than a deer. Do you agree?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; then five.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7329\" style=\"width: 3131px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7329\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7329\" src=\"http:\/\/glenvillaartgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/deer-6-of-6.jpg\" alt=\"five\" width=\"3121\" height=\"2027\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Noting\u00a0how much of the deers&rsquo; legs are under snow gives you an idea of how deep the snow is.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not all of the deer bounded away.\u00a0One stood his ground, glaring at me,\u00a0before going\u00a0back to nuzzling his neighbour. The others just stared, as if asking me why I was still standing there, invading their space.<\/p>\n<p>A friend once called deer rats with long legs. She may be right. In summer,\u00a0they are a real pest,\u00a0nibbling and sometimes destroying all my favourite plants. But seeing them run and leap\u00a0through the snow, I couldn&rsquo;t help but admire their agility and grace.
