{"id":7269,"date":"2019-01-30T22:40:59","date_gmt":"2019-01-30T22:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.siteandinsight.com\/?p=7269"},"modified":"2019-01-30T22:40:59","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T22:40:59","slug":"listening-to-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glenvillaartgarden.com\/fr\/listening-to-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"Listening to Winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On a winter day when temperatures throughout Mid and Eastern North America are plummetting, it\u00a0is difficult not to project human emotions onto the landscape.\u00a0 How can winter be so cruel and miserable?<\/p>\n<p>A poem by the American poet Wallace Stevens suggests we should think more objectively about what we see outside our door.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-feature-bd\">\n<div class=\"o-poem isActive\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<pre style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The Snow Man\n\nOne must have a mind of winter\nTo regard the frost and the boughs\nOf the pine-trees crusted with snow;\n\nAnd have been cold a long time\nTo behold the junipers shagged with ice,\nThe spruces rough in the distant glitter\n\nOf the January sun; and not to think\nOf any misery in the sound of the wind,\nIn the sound of a few leaves,\n\nWhich is the sound of the land\nFull of the same wind\nThat is blowing in the same bare place\n\nFor the listener, who listens in the snow,\nAnd, nothing himself, beholds\nNothing that is not there and the nothing that is.<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\n<p>To have \u00ab\u00a0a mind of winter\u00a0\u00bb requires an objectivity that escapes me.\u00a0At one and the same time I see beauty in\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0junipers shagged with ice\u00a0\u00bb and hear \u00ab\u00a0misery in the sound of the wind.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>At Glen Villa, inverted tree branches walk across the land like the original inhabitants, the Abenaki. Listening in the snow, I\u00a0\u00a0see beauty in the barbed wire encrusted with ice, and that\u00a0beauty\u00a0makes more real the cruelty implicit in the scene.
