Glory, hallelujah! Spring is finally here.<\/p>\n

Last Saturday the temperature rose to 24C (75 F). And suddenly, everything was bursting into bloom.<\/p>\n

Crocuses have been blooming for a few weeks now, and the suddenly warm day will shorten their life span. No matter. They remain a spot of light in the just-coming-to-life grass.<\/p>\n

No matter how many I plant, there are never enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Crocuses shine, even in half-dead grass.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
Buds\u00a0are forming\u00a0on the Cornelian cherry (cornus mas<\/i>), that most difficult of shrubs to photograph. The individual flowers are small and tucked close to the branches and even close-ups give no real sense of what the shrub, or small tree, looks like. When finally the buds open, from a distance my Cornelia cherry looks like a fuzzy pot of gold.<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

Iris reticulate are among my favourite of the early spring bloomers. Particularly this variety, which I think is ‘Cantab.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Here’s a close-up.\u00a0\u00a0It looks more purple than the on-line photos of ‘Cantab’. So is it ‘Harmony?’ Can anyone tell me? (And does it matter? It’s gorgeous whatever its name is.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

FINALLY the daffodils are poking their heads up on the berm above the Skating Pond. Most are nowhere near blooming but this one, at least, is about to open. In another week or two there will be several thousand fluttering and dancing in the breeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
