terrain<\/h1>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<strong>Patterson Webster<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Abenaki Walking II, Le d\u00e9frichement du terrain <\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 2018\u00ad\u20132020<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\">Troncs et branches de fr\u00eane, rails fendus, souches d&rsquo;arbres, herse, poteaux de c\u00e8dre, pommiers, b\u00fbches empil\u00e9es, granit, peinture acrylique<\/span><br \/>\nCollection de l&rsquo;artiste<\/p>\n<p>Cette installation sensible au site, s&rsquo;\u00e9tendant sur une zone bois\u00e9e et un champ d\u00e9frich\u00e9, met en sc\u00e8ne les nombreuses couches d&rsquo;histoire int\u00e9gr\u00e9es dans le terrain de Glen Villa Art Garden. La d\u00e9couverte d&rsquo;un gros amas rocheux (cr\u00e9\u00e9 lors de l&rsquo;enl\u00e8vement des roches des champs pour faciliter le labour) a inspir\u00e9 l&rsquo;artiste \u00e0 comm\u00e9morer une \u00e9poque historique douloureuse : le d\u00e9racinement et le d\u00e9placement des Ab\u00e9nakis, premiers intendants de la terre.<br \/>\nLes troncs et les branches des fr\u00eanes &#8211; qui, selon les Ab\u00e9nakis, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9s pour cr\u00e9er les premiers humains &#8211; sont invers\u00e9s et peints pour sugg\u00e9rer des gens marchant \u00e0 travers le pays. Les promeneurs se d\u00e9placent librement dans les bois jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce qu&rsquo;ils rencontrent une palissade qui bloque leur chemin. Maintenant br\u00fbl\u00e9s et crev\u00e9s, les marcheurs tournent le dos \u00e0 la barri\u00e8re, \u00e9vitant et exclus simultan\u00e9ment par cet obstacle \u00e0 leur mouvement traditionnel \u00e0 travers le pays.<\/p>\n<p>Un seul poteau peint d&rsquo;un agrandissement du bacille de la variole se trouve pr\u00e8s de l&rsquo;extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 de la palissade qui est en train de s&rsquo;effondrer, apr\u00e8s avoir servi de protection aux colons. Le terrain au-del\u00e0 t\u00e9moigne des changements apport\u00e9s par les colonisateurs europ\u00e9ens : un tas de pierres, des rang\u00e9es ordonn\u00e9es de pommiers, des \u00e9quipements agricoles rouill\u00e9s, des souches d&rsquo;arbres. Une cl\u00f4ture \u00e0 barreaux fendus \u00e9rig\u00e9e par l&rsquo;artiste d\u00e9limite et cl\u00f4t un espace herbeux \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur duquel se trouvent quatre morceaux coup\u00e9s d&rsquo;un seul ch\u00eane, peints en plaid rose ou bleu pour sugg\u00e9rer une famille de colons, fermement enracin\u00e9e et immobile.<\/p>\n<p>Le titre de l&rsquo;installation, The Clearing of the Land , est grav\u00e9 sur une pierre tombale en granit \u00e0 l&rsquo;entr\u00e9e du site, suivi de la date de 1803, ann\u00e9e o\u00f9 les Europ\u00e9ens ont re\u00e7u pour la premi\u00e8re fois des concessions de terres dans cette partie du Qu\u00e9bec. Il n&rsquo;y a pas de date de fin sur la pierre tombale, signe que le d\u00e9frichement se poursuit.<\/p>\n<p>Au-del\u00e0 du champ d\u00e9frich\u00e9, quatre marcheurs se tiennent au sommet du tas de pierres qui a inspir\u00e9 cette installation. Trois personnages &#8211; deux grands et un petit &#8211; sont emp\u00eatr\u00e9s dans des barbel\u00e9s, pris litt\u00e9ralement et m\u00e9taphoriquement par les effets durables du colonialisme. Des clous dispos\u00e9s en grille recouvrent la silhouette de la taille d&rsquo;un enfant, sugg\u00e9rant les effets d\u00e9vastateurs de la division des terres par les colons en parcelles appartenant \u00e0 des particuliers. Le quatri\u00e8me marcheur se d\u00e9marque, un A\u00een\u00e9 incapable de lib\u00e9rer les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations suivantes du pass\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Cette histoire humaine est encadr\u00e9e par des marqueurs de l&rsquo;histoire g\u00e9ologique du territoire.
